Just short and sweet Paul re Bill-96.

Your column was well written and states valid points.
I officially came out west from St E in the early 70’s. I was always a proud Quebecer, but the introduction of the language police was the straw for me visa-vie Quebec politics. And yes, we can make all kinds of analogies like yours about the Afghans. (Been there, seen it). Even though I have - siblings still living in Montreal I will never return. The last time I was there was for my mom’s funeral -- years ago.
I live in -------- and will live out my days happily here, regardless of speaking English, French, Mandarin, Punjabi, etc. etc
Cheer

Hi Paul,

Read your article and couldn't agree more. We are sickened by bill 96. Have been discussing it for days !
I can only imagine what would have happened to me when I moved here from (USA) had I been forced to be educated in French.
Thank god my parents were "Anglos" because my career at ---------- and all my travel exploits would have been greatly affected if all I could speak was French.
As far as our great leader goes I've been calling him "Adolf" for quite some time now because I've been watching this come for a long time now .
As with you I'm starting to feel like a second class citizen, even though I was able to teach myself pretty good French and love living in this province. It truly has a lot to offer .
But Enough is Enough !
I commend you for speaking out. Maybe It's time more of us did the same!
Hang in there !

Whoa... just wanted to say bravo about your piece on Bill 96. Well said and well written!

I've been trying to avoid watching the news for a variety of reasons -- Bill 96 being the primary one -- because it's just too depressing. It sickens me that while the rest of the world is battling wars, famine, disease, genocide, displacement...Quebec is STILL spending time, money and effort on saving the "endangered" French language.
I'm worried for all of us English-speaking Quebecers as we age and have to use the healthcare system more and more. I went to the dentist yesterday, and the hygienist is francophone but she automatically spoke English to me and was very pleasant about it. My dentist has always spoken English to me. As I sat there during my checkup, I wondered if this will change... I was tempted to ask him what he thinks about it all, but I didn't. But I suspect that he will continue serving his clients in English and French, regardless of what he is told to do by the CAQ (who are all closet Péquistes, if you ask me).
I speak French out in the community, but when it comes to health, I want to have things explained to me in English because I really need to understand, and my French isn't good enough for that. (Lord knows I've tried... I took French classes all through cegep and university, and I always speak French first in stores, etc.)
I've always felt that most francophones are happy to switch back and forth between English and French (even using charades when necessary!) -- it's governments/politics that tend to drive a wedge between us.
And we are stuck here because there's no way we'll move at this point in our lives. Plus, my kids and grandkids are here -- I can't leave them. (Thankfully, they are all thoroughly bilingual.)
Anyway, enough. I just wanted to thank you for writing that. I really hope some diehard francophones read it, but I doubt it. :)

Welcome back & Bill 96

I too do not think Bill 96 does any good for French nor any other people especially the next generation who will be extremely limited.
and restricted. In fact have I know some people that already decided they will not work in Quebec and plan to leave.
I also feel that this is the start of another FASCIST type of government (I won’t mention any historical famous names).
I am waiting with baited breath when they start demanding all English books be burned.
ACCCKKK !!!!

Excellent writing.

You have stated what many of us are thinking. I think it will be more harmful to Francophone Quebecers than to Anglophone Quebecers who will have the opportunity to be Bilingual.
