Now That We Have Enough Snow....
Get ready for the deep freeze. Over the next few days, we will be able to enjoy clear skies for a few days. Unfortunately, clear skies mean cold nights and very low temperatures. Depending on which weather websites you trust or look at, the low in the Montreal area will be up to minus 27C. Get your long undies out or stay indoors. We were in St- John's, Newfoundland between Christmas and New Year's and the grass is still showing and is green. I think we live in the wrong part of Canada. Enjoy the next few days of sunshine and catch all the rays you can. Also, you see that there hasn't much action on my site. That's because other than shovelling there hasn't been much action. If you have anything you would like posted or a topic you would like to see here, drop me an e-mail. The only e-mails I have been getting are from Groupon because I can't seem to unsubscribe to their contact list.

It Did Not Happen
Most of us are still here. NASA released a video explaining why the end of the world didn't happen yesterday and why the Mayan calendar was predicting it. Alas, last minute shopping is still on your to do list. Here is the NASA video.

Are You Ready?
Tomorrow, or today for you people who come to my site when you get to work, is the end of the world. The only thing I am not sure about is the time it will happen. The Mayans should have been more specific as it would have helped plan the day. I have a couple of things to do to tidy up before it happens and I would like to have a nice evening before calling it a day, FOREVER.
There is some speculation that it won't happen but I would put off the Christmas shopping for one more day if I were you. It's a good excuse anyway. Actually, the Mayans predicted this day many thousands of years ago and none of them have stayed around for it. It happens to be the first day of winter which starts at 6:12 am EST. My guess is that the end will be around that time, so Christmas shopping is definitely out. If you are reading this after 6:12 am, then I have lost the pool since that's the time I picked. Technically, since the entire world is ending, it could arrive as late 6am on Saturday morning, since Pago Pago in American Samoa is 6 hours behind us. So if you wake up early on Saturday there is still a chance that you won't have time for breakfast. Of course, for some of us who tend to go out on Friday evening, it feels like the end of the world many Saturday mornings.
If the Mayans have made a mistake in their calculation however, this is what you have to look forward to on Saturday. If you live in or around Two Mountains, there is another big storm coming in with up to 40cm of wet snow, the heavy kind. Here is the warning. I am no longer dreaming of a white Christmas. Since you put off your last minute shopping on Friday, you may have to hit the stores for one last time along with everyone else in the world.
Just in case the end does happen, I wish you all a Merry Christmas and if you don't believe in the afterlife, then I wish you nothing. If the sun rises on Saturday and nothing has changed, then enjoy the holidays, relax and wait for the next doomsday prediction.

2013 - Golf Deux-Montagnes' Last Year of Operation
An article in today's Journal de Montreal points out that the town of St-Eustache has purchased the entire land on which the Deux-Montagnes golf resides to convert it into an industrial park which may house the new St-Eustache train station. There will also some sections reserved for high end housing projects and green space.  This means that the last year of operation for the golf course will be 2013 as the owners claim that they have not been making money since 2008. The purchase price of the 7 million square feet of land was $13 million which the city says it will recuperate by selling the land back to the enterprises that will use it.
The reason this land was so attractive to the city was that it is in a 'white' zone. Farm land to the west would have been way too hard to rezone as it implicates the provincial government's agricultural protection commission (CPTAQ). This land gives the city 'carte blanche' and lets them establish their own municipal zoning.
The area will be developed starting in the fall of 2013 and could be developed over the next 20 years.
The news is obviously not so good for 2mo golfers as Deux-Montagnes was a close place to get in a quick round. Now, le Cardinal is the closest public golf course and it has its share of rumours around being sold and redeveloped into housing.
Another Two Mountains favourite course, St André, will no longer be operated by the Beaudet group. The rumour with this course is that it will be upscaled and may also be redeveloped into an exclusive housing project. Due to its distance from 'anything', many projects involving St André have fallen by the wayside in the last 4 decades. So we won't hold our breath on this one.

Warning About Unsolicited Calls Trying to Fix Your Computer
In the past, I have warned about security and making sure your online passwords are strong enough that no one can simply guess them. I also warned you about safely going on to the internet and making sure your virus protection is up to date. As Windows 'improves', it gets more secure without third party security such as AVG or Norton. In Windows 8, the built in security is strong but the anti-virus companies, of course, are saying that you still need to have third party security. I have used a free antivirus program from Avira and haven't had a problem in 7 years of using it.

The reason I am writing this is that I just got an email that yesterday someone in Two Mountains who shall remain nameless got a call from supposed Microsoft support telling him him there was something wrong with his computer. First of all, Microsoft has at least a billion users and they do not call people to fix their problems, so if that happens, hang up immediately. Here is a link from Microsoft that tells you exactly that. If you don't, the scary part about this scam is that they convince you that you have a problem and if you go along they will get you to access their web site. From there they can take remote control of your pc and install any software they want. They will point out problem that either don't exist or simply are not a big deal but show up in an error log. After a little while they will tell that they can 'fix' your problems for a fee (in this case $150). If you say no, they try to negotiate you down to $75. If you still refuse, look out as they started getting very angry and started deleting desktop icons until the person had the correct response to pull out the internet cable. Who knows how much damage they could have caused and who knows what software they installed while controlling the computer. There was this article in the the U.K. Guardian a couple of years ago that describes this scam that has evolved a bit in the last 2 years.
Beware: Unsolicited calls are never a good thing. There are a lot of bad people out there looking for a way to get your money in any way possible. If you bite even once, your name is sometimes sold to others on a 'sucker' list and you may be harassed with more sophisticated schemes.
In the past few days, I have had a few emails asking for money is different ways. These type of e-mails started years ago in Nigeria and some people actually fell for the scam and some even died trying to get their money. At this point, they are just funny to read as you can see they are all more or less copies of each other. I have posted a few here for a laugh.

Let Me Have a Little Rant
Recently I was at a fund raising event for the 4 Korners. It was the play Honky Tonk Blue - The Night Patsy Met Hank. This play has been touring the province and was chosen to be the event for this year's fundraising. It was a very good play with lots of music yet it was attended by only around 80 people. Ticket sales were so low that I was told the play was almost cancelled because it would have lost money. Finally I think it made a little bit of money but certainly not in proportion to the effort in bringing it to Two Mountains. If you missed it, here are some pictures and video from the show. Flash photography was prohibited, so the pictures may not be as clear as they could be. It was a disappointing turnout but everyone who attended were very impressed with the quality of the production. I understand that not everyone likes country music so that may partly explain the lack of interest but unless you have a severe Melophobia of C & W music you would have enjoyed the show.
The Anglophone community in Two Mountains is very lucky that programs and entertainment are available in English but I think many people take this for granted. After all, only 20% of Two Mountaineers claim they speak English at home according to the latest survey. We are far from getting bilingual status as a town yet we still have a few organizations that cater to the English people. The Creative Seniors program for example is going strong and is aided by government grants. The two English plays this coming weekend are part of the Creative Seniors program. We are also lucky that most of our municipal communications are available in English. We  also have the weekly North Shore News and the bi-monthly Community Connections and website.
What I am getting at is that some of our tax dollars on all three levels (municipal, provincial and federal) are coming back to us in grants to run these programs. It's our money but if we treat these with apathy, especially in the English community, this funding is very likely to dry up and we will be left with nothing. It is in our interest to take advantage of these programs and to support their activities. In the song Big Yellow Taxi, the lyrics go: 'You don't know what you got till it's gone.' If we don't actively participate in the events that volunteers are working hard to bring you, they will 'pave paradise and put up a parking lot.'
If you have any comments I will gladly post them on my site in a new section I will start if I get comments.

Just in passing, The annual food drive (la Guignollé) went very well last Sunday but not every house in Two Mountains was canvassed. There were many volunteers that helped go door to door however at the end of the day there were 7 routes not covered for lack of people and cars to get there. A lot of food and money was collected but it could have been better. By the way, half empty and past dated mayonnaise jars and single (loose) apples are not considered non-perishable food items. Even non-perishable items in cans have perished if the can is full of rust on the outside. These items were a very tiny percentage of food donated but if you won't even eat it, just throw it out. I am sure none of my readers are in this category of people so this last message is not really necessary.

New Public Benches Enhancing Two Mountains
Excerpts from the City Press release
of November 7, 2012 – Citizens of Deux-Montagnes will soon enjoy the use of five new public benches. Indeed, Mrs. Susan (Dubuc) Campbell, from Deux-Montagnes, presented the City last September with two commemorative benches and the City of Deux-Montagnes has acquired three public benches made from recycled materials that will be installed in Parc Armitage (near 24th avenue).
The two benches donated by Mrs.Campbell, bucolic in style, are identified by a registration plate commemorating the memory of the Dubuc-Gore family, Mrs. Campbell’s deceased mother and grandparents. Both benches are installed near 5th Avenue and École des Mésanges (14th Avenue). This generous donation is not the first of its kind as she has already donated a first bench, located on the grounds of Holy Family Church.

Habitat for Humanity Deux-Montagnes Region Delivers Its Second Home
Sainte-Marthe-sur-le-Lac, October 29, 2012 - The Champagne-Lapointe family realized a dream today as members of the Board of Directors of Habitat for Humanity (Two Mountains Region HPHRDM) handed them the keys to their new home in the presence of partners and elected officials.
Located at 3031 Paul Street in Sainte-Marthe-sur-le-Lac, the house was built in 5 months and is safe, decent and affordable, which is Habitat's goal for their housing projects. The ceremony was also the opportunity to thank the many volunteers and partners who have helped build this residence.
"Translated -> The keys to the family is a unique moment full of emotion. It is the culmination of much effort by all members of our organization, the brave volunteers and our generous financial partners. I would like to thank everyone involved in some way in the realization of this dream. Together, we allow a family to break the cycle of poverty by becoming the owner of the house, "stated the president of HPHRDM, Denis Pilon.
The new owner, Dominique Champagne-Lapointe, Said: (again translated) "Today is an amazing dream! We enter our new home as we enter a new part of our life where happiness will be waiting for us. The twins will each have their own room and they are delighted! The house is full of good energy because it was built by men and women with big hearts. We are extremely grateful!
This is the region's Habitat For Humanity's second home as the first was delivered in Two Mountains in 2009. Habitat for humanity is an international non profit organization that has delivered over 500,000 homes worldwide either by building new homes or by renovating, repairing and improving current homes sheltering over 2.5 million people. For more information on Habitat for Humanity you can visit their site here. The regional site is also available here (in French only). Thanks to Valérie Sauvé for the picture.

Come Fly With Us
Last Tuesday was a great day for a flight over our region. Some of you who follow my pages closely may remember that I won a raffle at the City of Deux-Montagnes Golf Tournament on Friday the 13th of July. The prize was a one hour hydroplane flight around the area donated (and flown) by Louis Cyr of Louis Cyr Insurance. We had postponed it a few times which was great since the fall colours were peaking when we finally we able to go last Tuesday (October 9th). The visibility was fantastic and the sun shone for most of the trip that was closer to 2 hours of flying time as we landed at Montebello and once again to fuel up near Rosemere. When flying over the Ottawa River you could easily see Mont Tremblant and even Mont Laurier. It was a great afternoon and many thanks to Louis for taking the time to do this and also raising money for a worthy cause by raffling off these trips. We took lots of pictures and you can see them here in a slide show or here one at a time.

On Sunday September 2nd, Two Mo Pub will be having a best bal tournament at the St-André Golf Club. The price is only $55 and includes cart, a chicken dinner and a beverage back at the pub. Tee-offs will start around 10am. You must register by Friday August 24th. You can put in a foursome or they will fit you in with other nice players. The Labour Day Sunday tournament got its start over 50 years ago and the Pub is trying to rekindle its existence.

52 Golfers Brave the Elements at the Legion Br. 185 Golf Tournament
Actually, Saturday (August 18th) was a perfect day for golf. With the temperature hovering around 22ºC and not a cloud in the sky, one could not ask for a better day. Add to that the fastest tournament I have ever played in with no foursome taking longer than 4 hours and 15 minutes to complete the 18 holes. Tournament organizer Jean-Guy Matton also made sure that all golfers and guests received a prize at the chicken dinner following the tournament at the Legion. There were also some prizes won in a draw. Randy DeBonis and Lorraine Hutchison both won a $75 gift card at Golftown while a Callaway golf Bag was won by Judy Leroux. The tournament was a 4 ball Vegas and the lowest score was 63 (-9) followed closely by a -8. Everyone had a great time and is looking forward to next year's event. Here a few pictures. Note that not many were taken on the course as it went so fast.
