Alan
Poplett - 1952 - 2014
Alan Poplett, formerly of Fabreville, passed away on
Monday July 14th at the age of 61. He was doing what he loved best, riding
his motorcycle on one of his many adventures. This time with his friend, up
the Alaskan highway. Tragically, on the return trip his bike left the
road and Alan succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital. He is
survived by his wife and soul-mate Cynthia (Prin) Poplett nee: Gouldson of
St. Eustache.
Alan, Prin and family have been living in St. Albert, Alberta, for many
years.
Excerpt from his online obituary: Alan Poplett, loving husband of 40
years to Cynthia (nee Gouldson), and devoted father to sons: Doug and Jon,
passed away on Monday July 14th, 2014 after a motorcycle accident in Stewart
B.C. His family takes comfort knowing he died doing what he loved.
As well as his adored wife and sons, he is survived by his brothers in both
blood and spirit: Mike (Joanne) Poplett and Terry Poplett; his loving
sister, Leslie (Pierre) Berniquez; and 8 brothers and sister-in-laws; 14
nieces and nephews; all of their children; and all the friends met through
the course of a long life well lived.
He is predeceased by his father, Robert Poplett; mother, Dorothy Poplett
(nee Blunt); and sister-in laws: Fran Poplett (nee Forcier) and Sandy
Gouldson (nee Gordon).
A Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m., on Saturday, July 19, 2014

Alberta. A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Monday, July 21, 2014
at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 10 Akins Drive, St.
Albert, Alberta.
We will miss you Alan. When we cry in sorrow, it's not sorrow for the loss
of the one we love, for we know you are not lost while we hold you in our
hearts. Rather we sorrow for the loss of light you brought into this world.
The world is a darker place without you, but your legacy lives on in those
you left behind, and we will come together in your name and shine a little
bit brighter. To view his online obituary,

Cooper's
Hawk At Home in Our Backyard
As you may have noticed on my entry screen, four
rather large Cooper's Hawks have taken over my back yard. Although this may
seem to be good news for the environment, it certainly isn't for the many
songbirds that sit at my feeders. Let's say the activity around the feeders
has slowed down quite a bit. I don't usually keep my feeders going in the
summer but I noticed that there were some juvenile cardinals around so
decided to keep the sunflower seed going. Somehow, the starlings have not
even been around but the squirrels are having a field day. The bizarre thing
is that the squirrels are not frightened by the hawks and the hawks are
ignoring them even when they are a few feet apart. Either the squirrels
don't taste good or the hawks don't want to deal with the fur. This morning,
as I tried to get on my back deck, there were 2 hawks perched on the
railing. In the last few days I managed to get a few pictures and a video of
one stomping around the backyard.

The "New'
Barrels Officially Opens
Last
January (barely 6 months ago), I posted a video of the Laval West
institution, Aux Vieux Barils Brasserie, being demolished. Today, July 8th,
was the official opening of its replacement establishment, La Réserve. The
place was buzzing as the lunchtime crowd was checking out the new digs. The
two floor structure is much bigger than the old building and can easily
handle triple the number of people. The prices are not cheap but reasonable.
I had Fish and Chips (with French Fries) and it was a tasty treat at $16
(plus tax and tip). They have many flat screen TV to show sporting events a
3 by 3 array above the bar. Of course, it has lost some of the character of
the old premises and will probably lose its old characters as the price of
beer seems low until you add the tax. It's definitely worth the visit so you
can judge for yourselves. It does not take reservations so you have to hope
there will be room. That shouldn't be a problem though because there is
plenty of seating. To see some pictures,
please click
here as we made a point of celebrating Ricky D's birthday with a lunch
there today. To see the demolition video

Drive for the Cure Golf Tournament Raises Record Amount
The 14th annual Dan Klimas - DFTC Golf tournament
raised an impressive $71,000 for the fight against cancer. A great day out
on the Fontainebleau golf course where 160 golfers helped raise the money
that will go to the Royal Victoria Foundation. The weather was perfect and
everyone had a good time with lots of food and drink available at the
course. Next year's edition will certainly sell out once again by February.

Holy Family
Golf Tournament
Saturday June 21st was the first day of summer and
it couldn't have been a better day for being outside. 68 golfers and plenty
of volunteers were on the Oka Golf course to take advantage of the longest
day of the year. The Holy Family Annual Golf Tournament, that had been
founded by Glenn Hogan, went on without Glenn but his presence was felt by
all. Over 100 people then congregated at the church hall for a great steak
supper. There were prizes for all attendees and a raffle with lots more
prizes. The raffle itself brought in $700 but more was raised through the
sale of tickets and the 19 sponsors of the holes at the golf course. Thanks
to all attendees, sponsors and volunteers who made this day a special one.

Four
Candidates Vie For Council Position In July By-election
Loosely Translated From
This l'Eveil Article
Following the
resignation of Councillor Robert Montplaisir, in the month of May, the City
of Deux-Montagnes will hold a by-election in the Golf district. The vote is
scheduled for Sunday, July 13, from 10am to 8pm, with advanced polling on
Sunday July 6, between noon and 8pm. Voters will have to choose among four
contenders.
For the team of Mayor Denis Martin, Deux-Montagnes Autrement, Margaret
Lavallée will be running for the post. Daughter of the late Nelson
Lavallée and daughter-in-law of former Mayor Clifford Parr, the Two-Mountain
native, currently an at-home mom, is involved in several local organizations
(charity, sports, school).
Member of the defeated Denis Joannette team during last November's election,
James McAllister will try his luck again. He has some experience
since he was a municipal councillor (in opposition) in the last term of
Mayor Lauzon. The native of Deux-Montagnes is a lieutenant in the Fire
Department of the City of Montreal and in his words; '..would like, once
again, to continue to serve this community with all the energy, passion, and
experience that I havefor this City' .
The third candidate, Rudy Neumayer, is running as an independent. A
business professional, he is well known in the community for having presided
over the Canada Day for ten years and Heritage Social Club for three years.
Finally, a few minutes before the close of nominations last Friday
afternoon, a fourth candidate threw his hat into the ring. Patrick
Préville has been added to the list. This young entrepreneur in public
relations is 35 years old and moved to Deux-Montagnes two and a half years
ago to start a family. The four candidates will have just a few weeks to
convince voters of the Golf ward to elect them for what is left of the 4
year term.
During the council meeting of June 12th, Mayor Denis Martin, regretted the
cost of unexpected election but was pleased to find out that they will cost
'only' $25,000 as opposed to the earlier estimate of $40,000.
Colleen
Baxter Sullivan To Write a Detective Series
Author Colleen Baxter Sullivan, now with two
published novels has been hired by Triplicity Pubishing to write a detective
series. The first book in this series is called YOLK and it will be out
within the next three months. She is currently writing another in the series
called Gritty.
They are and will all be about this wonderful character, Adam Garwood, who
is a gay detective with offices in the plateau. His client list is a unique
blend of people. It is like every other mystery/suspense novel, with one
exception, the cast of characters are extremely entertaining. He not only
has to solve cases but is constantly explaining his personal choices, which
at times interfere with his career. You cannot help but love this man. It is
a great read.
Her two previous novels, Lil's Way and Jaded dealt with people with mental
issues. Colleen says; 'I have chosen to leave writing about mental health
because I am known for my description, plotting and of course a touch of
murder thrown in the blend. I don’t want to be known solely for writing
about mental illness. So, the way I look at it, why not write a detective
series?'

Newspaper Archives
Many of you have perused my Victory archives. One of the
regular visitors to my site, Susan D., pointed out to me that Google News
has scanned archives of thousands of newspapers. For example there are
almost 25,000 issues of the Montreal Gazette dating from January 1st 1878 to
November 2006. The nice thing about it is that they are searchable. You
could spend countless hours looking through these archives which are very
readable, especially if you use the zoom options. Thank you Susan for bring
this to my attention. The link to these archives is

are many others as you will see. Hint: to find a particular newspaper on the

On
Saturday June 7th between 10am and 4pm, citizens will be encouraged to
discover or rediscover local merchants. Tanya Bougie, spokesperson Business
Celebration Event Committee, announced that a new Business Celebration Event
will be held in Deux-Montagnes. The Business Celebration is a day-long event
which aims to encourage residents to venture out of their homes and become
more familiar with local Deux-Montagnes’ businesses. On that day, all of the
City’s merchants will be out in force to form a large outdoor market,
invading parking lots and outdoor terraces to display their
products/services for sale and to meet with residents. It’ll be sort of like
a large Open House – an opportunity for local residents to receive discount
coupons, samples, food and drink. It’s also a party, so there will be lots
of balloons, inflatable games, as well as face painting for the kids, music
and animation in front of shops and in parking lots.

It is with much sadness that I have to post the news
of Glenn Hogan passing away suddenly on Thursday May 29th. His death is a
shock to everyone who knew him. Glenn was foremost a family man leaving
behind a large family in mourning. He also had many other 'families' that
will miss him dearly; his hockey family, his Holy Family Church, his school
family and his community family.
Visitation will be at the Guay
Funeral Complex, 146 Rue St-Louis, St-Eustache on Monday June 2, 2014 from
2pm to 5pm and from 7pm to 9pm. A Celebration of Glenn's Life will be held
at Holy Family Parish in Deux-Montagnes, Tuesday, June 3 at 11 a.m. followed
by a reception in the Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers please make a donation
in Glenn's memory to his beloved Holy Family Parish, 1001 chemin D'Oka,
Deux- Montagnes, QC J7R 1L9
(Obituary
From Montreal Gazette). It is with heavy hearts that we announce that
Glenn passed away unexpectedly at home on May 29, 2014 beside his cherished
wife and best friend of forty-three years, Marlene (Beaudoin). Beloved
father of Lea Anne (Rob), Shannon (Jason) and Erin (Shawn) and proud "Pappy"
to Riley, Aidan, Liam and Grace. Dear brother and brother-in-law to Wayne
(Lillian), Donna, Neil (Debbie), Fred (Celeste), Brian (Lois) and Joanne
(Nicky). Beloved uncle to Kim, Karen, Shawn, Kevin, Lauren, Randy, Shari,
Jerry, Derek, Andrew, Carly, Nicholas, Michael and many grandnieces and
grandnephews. Joining his mother Rita, father Kenneth and brother Barry,
Glenn will be cheering for the Habs to bring home the cup next year! A man
of quiet and yet resolute faith, he was a pillar of the Holy Family Parish
in Two Mountains and an exemplar to those who aspired to live the
beatitudes. A true man for others, Glenn loved and reaped many-fold what he
sowed. An educator and principal for over four decades, he nurtured,
inspired and challenged his students, staff and colleagues alike to live up
to the potential he knew they possessed. Glenn was a passionate man for whom
half measures did not exist. He was a fearless presence between the pipes
for over forty years, playing in the Laval Teachers Hockey League, an
Alouettes season ticket holder for sixteen years and lifelong Habs fan who
never missed an opportunity to proudly wear the bleu-blanc-rouge. As a
friend and a man, he was without equal; he would grip your hand like a vice,
offer a listening ear, a warm smile and an open heart. He made your problems
his and considered no request too inconsequential. His greatest passion of
course was his family and he was the rock on which it was built. He loved
them all beyond words and took immense pride in their accomplishments and
more importantly how they lived their lives. A greater son, husband, father,
and grandfather simply did not exist.

City Councillor Robert Montplaisir Resigns
Loosely Translated from
this l'Eveil article
Elected last November as part of Denis Martin's Deux-Montagnes Autrement
team, Robert Monplaisir, has resigned which will force a by-election
scheduled for the end of summer.
After serving only six months as councillor for the du Golf ward, Mr.
Montplaisir caused too frequent tension during caucus meetings in the eyes
of Mayor Denis Martin.
"Communication and teamwork became very difficult with him. It even reached
a lack of respect that I could not tolerate within my team. So I decided to
exclude him from the caucus, but I asked him to continue to serve as
independent councillor to represent the people who elected him. "
This proposal was rejected, and a few hours later, Robert Montplaisir handed
in his resignation. "I did not want to stay doing nothing and just collect
my cheque at the end of month," he commented ICI Radio-Canada. He also
believes that his exclusion from caucus is because he refused to follow the
"party line". Six months ago, Robert Montplaisir had indeed voted against
the majority vote. He voted against the 2014 budget, because he wanted a
freeze on municipal taxes ( it was eventually increased by 1.92 %) and the
latest was his vote against the transfer of 911 to Saint -Eustache.
The 'party line' argument was refuted
by the Mayor Denis Martin who says that each councillor is free to vote with
their conscience.
The result is that a by-election will be held soon. "The Director of
Elections shall select a date between July 6 and 7 September ," said Mr.
Martin, also stating the cost generated by this election it is estimated
that between $35,000 and $50,000. An expense, he adds, that the cash
strapped city did not need at this time.

'Marcus' as we used call him, played many years for the Laval Teachers Hockey
Club L.T.H.C. He was part of the kids that joined us in the early 90's. He
hasn't played for us for a few years but he was always be remembered for the fun
times we had together. Rest in peace Marcus. To see a picture of The Kids,

You Know You're Getting Old When......
After my hockey game today I had to go get some
copies made at an office supplies store in St-Eustache. Since the copies were
going to take a while, I decided to go next door to the Fu Lam lunch buffet. We
have been back from Asia for almost 5 weeks, so the moratorium on consuming
Asian food was about to end. The buffet is $11.49 so I figured the bill was
going to be just over $13.00 with tax. I was pleasantly surprised as the waiter
handed me a bill of just $10.57. The pleasantly part ended when I looked closer
at the bill (on left) and saw why my meal had been discounted. Hey, I am only 2
years and a bit away from 60, but I didn't ask for that discount. I just hope
that their rule is not for 65 and over. Don't get me wrong, I'll be the first
one to ask for the discount rate when the time comes but it's the first time
this has happened to me. Actually it was the second time. The first time was a
couple of years ago when I was with woman I went to grade school with and
someone asked her if I was her father. Ouch!!! These two occasions hurt almost
as much as the first time I got called 'sir' in a bar in Boston by what I
thought were people my age. When I paid the bill at the Fu Lam, I gave the guy a
$2.50 tip. He acted surprised, so I think he realized then that I might not be a
senior.

Free Roaming Deer in Nara Park, Japan
We have been back from our Vietnam/Japan trip
for over a month now. I said I would put together some videos that we took
there. Well, we have been busy so it hasn't happened. I did post a video on
YouTube today that shows some deer that roam free in the city of Nara. They are
wild, however they are smart enough to know that when you buy these special
biscuits that they are about to be fed by a tourist. The video shows me being
chased by few deer before I even had time to unwrap their treats. By the time
the video starts, I already had been bitten in the rear a few times. Some of the
deer are very polite and will bow to you before you give them food but some do
not have any manners.

Golf Season Finally Opens
After a long hard winter and a cold spring, the golf season opened in the
Montreal area. Of course, International 2000 opened a few weeks ago, but on
Friday, Quatre Domaines and Cardinal (I think) opened for play. Both courses at
4 Dom were booked solid through the weekend, but Darrin S. managed to book a
twosome on Easter Sunday morning. It was a little nippy at first but the layers
started coming off on the back nine. I should have quit after one hole and
finished the season under par after sinking a 55 footer for birdie on the first
hole. The ponds were still covered in ice and the dozens of balls on top made it
tempting to try and retrieve them but the ice was just thick enough for geese to
walk on. There was still a lot of snow in bunkers and in the rough which made
some of the conditions a little tough. It was a nice outing nevertheless. As in
the past, I will be posting most of my games on the 'latest golf' link on the
above right side. If you want to see pictures of the conditions at Quatre
Domaines, you can

Age, will be presenting the play Grandpa is Not a Cash Cow &
Grandma Won't Take Any Bull. It will be held at LTMHS at the low

must-see for everyone.

More Reasons to Unlike Facebook
I have been a casual Facebook user since 2007. I
actually 'deleted' my userid from 2008 to 2009 because I didn't really need it
as I was using this website to communicate information to some 'followers'. I
reluctantly reactivated my FB id in late 2009. By reactivate, I mean they had
never deleted my account, a fact I hate since they still use your info after you
think you are not there anymore. There are many other things I don't like of
Facebook; The incessant game requests, people who double post the same items,
the bad luck curses if you don't re-post something, people re-posting hoaxes
without checking them out, Bill Gates giving away money if you like a certain
link, what people ate for lunch and much more. One of the latest 'scams' is
sharing a link that forces you to like another website which is designed to suck
your personal info from FB and blast with more advertizing, or worse, that
targets you as a possible identity theft victim. The very latest Facebook
Frenzy is someone posing as someone you know. Yesterday, I got a friend request
from someone I already was friends with on FB. I thought that maybe this person
had 'unfriended' me by mistake or on purpose but had seconds thoughts. So I
accepted the friend request. A few hours later, I bumped in to that friend and
asked him why he had re-asked me to accept his friend request. He said that he
hadn't even been on Facebook and some other people were asking him the same
thing. He had changed his password because someone had hacked into his account.
The problem is that those requests were not coming from his FB account. Someone
had opened another account with their exact name, extracted all the information
from FB including all his pictures (there are programs that will do that in a
few seconds). All that was left to do for that person is to take the list of
friends and send out friend requests with the 'fake' Facebook and access those
people's information. To be safe, I unfriended both the real and fake person,
sorry Mike. Another weird thing happened this morning. I had someone accept a
friend request from me. The problem is that I don't think that actually sent out
this request. has someone hacked my account. I am seriously contemplating saying
so long to FB and I will share any information I need to share on this scam-free
2mopaul.com. btw I had a bowl of cereal this morning with a cut up banana and
toast with strawberry jam. Like?
Mikaël
Kingsbury
Celebrated by City
On Thursday April 10th, the city invited its
citizens to honour the achievements of Olympic silver medalist, Mika
Kingsbury. Along with his silver medal, the three time world freestyle FIS ski
champion brought his 6 crystal globes to display. The city first presented him a
framed lucky Olympic loonie from the Canadian mint. Then, Mayor Denis Martin
presented Mikawith a sign that shows that one of the parks in Two Mountains
will now be named after him. Mikawas almost speechless as he thanked the city
for the gesture. Mikas mother also said a few words on the emotional
experience in Sochi. It was a good turnout at the Veterans Hall and Mikael had
his picture taken with many Two Mountaineers and signed many autographs.

St Jude Elementary School Raises $450 in Walk-a-Thon for St-Eustache Hospital
On Thursday April 10th, the children of St-Jude
School held their annual 'Marche-ton' to raise funds for the St-Eustache
Hospital Foundation in cooperation with the City of Two-Mountains. They walked
for a half an hour then each class took their turn at pulling the city's ladder
truck. Meanwhile in the gym, there was an aerobics class where the kids got to
do more exercise. In all, they raised $450, which will probably matched by the
city in order to round it off to $1000. The funds will go towards the the
TDon for the foundation which will be held on Friday April 25th starting at
7pm. It will be on Videotron's channel 9.

Spring Is Having a Hard Time Getting Started
As I look in my backyard at the remaining snow,
it's hard to believe that spring will ever arrive.
Since the buds will be taking a while to come out, I decided to
put together a slideshow to remember the great colours that the spring brings.
It also proved to be very relaxing to watch. If you have 10 inutes or so when
you need to relax,
give it a try by clicking here. I suggest that you view in in full screen.
You can also speed up the slide interval if you don't have 10 minutes. The
slideshow option might not work on tablets that don't support flash. If that is
the case,
use this link.
2MOPAUL Still in English
Last Monday, I posted an April Fool's joke that
my site had to be posted in French. Lots of people fell for it but I removed the
article at midnight. Some people only figured it out on a subsequent visit
because they had not clicked on the link of the letter that I had supposedly
received from the OQLF. If you want to see what I had posted as the letter.
this is the link.

Edmond St-Laurent 1927-2014
(Translated Excerpt from La Presse of April 2, 2014) Mr. St-Laurent of
Deux-Montagnes passed away on March 31, 2014, at the age of 86 years, Husband of
Mrs. Yolande Hachhe is survived by his children, Marc (Murielle), Aline
(John), Monique (Gaetan), Luc (Mari), Claire and their mother Hne
Latulippe, numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, brothers and sisters,
the Hachamily and many other relatives and friends. We will remember Mr.
St-Laurent for his many years devoted to the Deux-Montagnes Regional School
Board. The family will receive condolences Saturday, April 5, 2pm to 5pm and
from 7pm to 9 pm and Sunday, April 6 at 9am at the Goyer Funeral Complex at 147
Arthur-Sauv St-Eustache. A prayer service will be held on Sunday, April 6 at
11 am in the complex's chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian
Multiple Sclerosis Society would be appreciated.
Mr.
'Eddy' St-Laurent was the principal at St-Jude when many of us were there in the
mid 60's. 2MOPAUL.COM would not exists were it not for Mr. St-Laurent. He was
directly involved in the fact that my father decided to move to Two-Mountains
from Jonquiere in 1964. He is responsible for getting my father a position at
the school board and my eldest brother, Georges, a teaching job. He also sold us
the land for the house we built on Grand-Moulin. When we arrived here in 1964, I
was sent to St-Jude with a very limited knowledge of the English language as I
was in French school in Jonquiere. Without Mr. St-Laurent, my life and my
family's lives would be certainly be completely different and I certainly
wouldn't be typing this right now nor would I have attended Marianopolis College
where I met my wonderful wife. Thank you Eddy! By the way, I just learned today
when talking to my brother, what an integral part of Mr. St-Laurent played in
our lives.
