The Charm Of Old Two Mountains
Many of you that are on Facebook belong to a group called Lake of Two Mountains / Saint Eustache. Is a 'closed' group that now has over 1,500 members. If you are on Facebook, you can ask to join the group and see all the posts. It's a great forum to see old (and new) pictures of our little township. Many people who post to this site are ex Two Mountainers that reminisce about how things used to be. Lately, because of the ultimate demolition of a major landmark, Jed's, there are many comments on how sad the town has become and that progress is killing the town. Of course, many of the comments come from people who left 2MO in the 70's and rarely come back to visit. Somehow these people do not want anything to change in their old stomping grounds.

I am not saying that all changes to Two-Mountains have been great but many of these changes were (and will be) unavoidable. There are a couple of driving factors for many of these changes. One is that Two Mountains has grown to use up every piece of land possible unlike the surrounding towns which still have land to exploit. Two Mountains is busting at the seams. The other driving factor is the fact that our little town of 17,000 residents has two commuter train stations where environmental laws require that the population density surrounding mass transit to be at a certain level. The city had to respond by changing some zoning within a certain radius of both stations. In certain cases, it means being forced to build multi residential dwellings when replacing old houses that are beyond renovation. The addition of the light rail system (REM) that will eventually service the area will only bring on more density. Of course, the current train system will suffer for many years before we see any improvement but that's another debate.
The vertical growth of Two-Mountains may look awful from the outside, but as a 2MO taxpayer, it is a another story. Some people can't believe that the city let the 8 storey Selection be built at the end of 8th avenue replacing the lowly Manoir. The Manoir built in the late 60's was not up to code for senior living and residents were subsidized by the city at a cost of hundreds of thousands of dollars a year. Replace that with 227 units that now pay municipal taxes. Without this growth, the taxes for the people that have remained in Two-Mountains would be exorbitant. Also, for the Ex-pats that complain that their old town is not the same as it was, isn't 'progress' affecting where you are living now. If not, please tell me where you live and I might join you.
I will be posting some pictures of the 'rebuilding' of Two-Mountains as it happens and yes it's sad that the Jed's building will be gone but Jed's hasn't been Jed's for how many years now? By the way, Jed's and all the buildings around it are not being demolished for housing. They are being removed to allow an overpass to be built over the future REM rail lines which will see a train pass every 3 minutes during rush hours. Why 3 minutes? A train is supposed to leave every 6 minutes during morning and afternoon rush hours. For each train that leaves, another one has to come back.
If you are on Facebook and want to join the Two-Mountains group, go to this link and ask to join.

Grand Moulin Train Station

The area around the Grand Moulin train will inevitably change over the next years when the light rail system starts running. There are provincial and municipal rules on the density of population around mass transit hubs. You won't recognize the place in a few years. In the last 7 years, there have been many changes and the next 7 will be even more drastic. Take a look at the Grand Moulin station looking towards Jed's which is now empty and waiting for demolition. Here is a series of pictures from 2011 to 2018. Stay tuned, the demolition of the houses on blvd du lac seems to be in the works. I will post videos and pictures of the proceedings as they happen.

Back From A Great Golf Trip
As you may have seen by my splash screen, I was busy moving loose impediments last week in Arizona. I had a week golf 'vacation' in the Phoenix area. It was quite the week and the highlight for me was birdying the famous Stadium 16th hole par 3 at The Scottsdale TPC. The scenery around some of the courses there was amazing. Add to that, the fact that snakes are currently hibernating because the nights get cold. Although we played 156 holes in 6 days, I managed to update a blog with scorecards and pictures. To access it, simply click on the golf ball in the .com above.

Sandra (née Baburek) Duff - February 25,1951- November 16,2018

Sandra died peacefully at Saint-Louis Residence in Orleans, Ontario from complications of Multiple Sclerosis. Sandra was a strong, independent and intelligent woman who embraced her roles as a beloved wife to Kenneth, mother to Allison (Robert), Stephanie and Laura (Robbie), grandma to Emma, Caleigh, Audrey and George, sister to Christine and Wanda. She is predeceased by her parents Shirley and Steve Baburek.

Sandra was a dearly loved friend to all who knew her and highly regarded teacher who easily gained the respect of her colleagues and students over her more than thirty years in the profession. As a family we all agree that she was the strongest person we have ever known. A private family goodbye has taken place. A Celebration of Sandra’s Life for family and friends will be held on Saturday, December 8, 2018  from 1 to 5 pm at her Vankleek Hill home. The family thanks the dedicated home care and residence staff who have cared for Sandra as her health declined. In lieu of flowers a donation to the charity of your choice that supports children would be appreciated. To express your condolences, make a donation or plant a “Tree of Remembrance” for Sandra.

On Remembrance Weekend, the local Legion marked the 100th anniversary of the end of the Great War by inviting past presidents of the Legion to attend the ceremonies. New Antique Store in Two-Mountains
A few weeks ago, a new business came to life in Two Mountains. Owned and operated by Audrey and Sylvain, this new antique store is situated at 1607 Oka road (across from the BMO). The store is divided into several themed rooms and is like a visit to the past. They sell, buy and you can even bring in objects to put on consignment. There is something for every budget and if you are into music, the vinyl room upstairs is a must. If you are thinking of decorating a room with antiques Audrey and Sylvain can help you with the design.

The store itself is closed Monday to Wednesday to give the owners time to do picking for the store. It's open from Noon to 9pm on Thursday and Fridays, 9am to 5pm on Saturdays and 11am to 5pm on Sundays. The store is already decked out for Christmas, so it's a good way to get into the spirit and maybe find the perfect gift. You can find their Facebook page by clicking here. Their phone number is 450 413-0377.

Click here for a sneak peek at some of the rooms.

LTMHS Class of 2018 Bursaries Awarded
On Friday October 26th, the Class of '18 from LTMHS celebrated their graduation ceremonies. Among the awards and bursaries given out that night were the Paul Goyetche Visual Arts and Multi-media $500 bursary and the 2mopaul.com $250 Music bursary. The recipient of this year's Visual Arts bursary which has been given out each year since 2013 was Emily Cousineau. This year's award was in memory of Darlene Gargul. The Music bursary was added in 2016 as the fund raising was going very well. This award went to Liam Taylor and was dedicated to Christian Cortial, a passionate music lover who passed away in October 2017.

As you may notice in the picture below and the icon in the links above, LTM's school crest was redesigned and has replaced the original that hadn't been really changed in 66 years. The LTM Bursary link is permanently on the above right and is where you can see the donors and pictures of the past 9 winners. It is also where you can make a donation to help keep the awards going for years to come.

There will be a fund raising event in the next weeks. I have been donated 2 great seats for the Saturday December 1st Canadiens vs. New York Rangers hockey game at the Bell Centre and will be holding an online auction on this site with the winning bid taking home the pair of tickets. The minimum bid will be $200 (value is well over $400) and the current bid will be shown on top of this page. More details will be posted as soon as I get the tickets but if you would like to bid now just send an email with your offer.
Send an email to auction@2mopaul.com with your bid.

Rocky Holt Softball Tournament Wrap-up
Message from Margie Lavallée, organizer of the annual Rocky Holt Softball Tournament:
This year was our biggest tournament we had 24 teams, with 3 divisions and two parks 3 diamonds running all day Saturday The games started Friday night (August 10th) with the Finals on Sunday.
If I may I would like to thank all the teams who participated but I need to give a big thank you to Bob Fordham, Brian Snell, Jamie McDonald and Andrew and Alex Green who are our main umpires that weekend, Bob has been doing the tournament for over 20 years and Brian also I believe. They volunteer their time every year without hesitation, and for that I want to say thank you from my entire Committee.
For the last 2 years we have been donating to Sercan in St-Eustache. We spoke to Jimmy' Shields' family and asked them where they would like us to donate the money raised. They said Sercan because they offered such good care to Jimmy before he passed away last year.
This year our tournament raised $10,000, one of the best years to date. We will keep donating to Sercan in the future.
So I would just like to thank my Committee who worked incredibly hard that weekend and a thank you to their families for being patient with me :)

Back From A Short Trip to Ontario
Last week we went on a short trip to Ontario. Our original plan was to rent a motor home for a week and go 'somewhere' in Ontario. After some research and cost analysis we decided to cut the mini vacation to a 6 day (5 night) and use our car as our main source of transportation. At first we had no idea where we were going to go. Since we would be in Ontario and probably be near Toronto at one point, we thought it would be nice if we could get tickets for the musical 'Come From Away' playing at the Royal Alexandra Theatre. It's a sold out show but there happened to be two tickets available on the for the Wednesday October 10th show which less than a week away. The seats were in the 3rd row so once they were purchased even at face value (over $200 each) there was no way we weren't going to Toronto to use them. By the way, the show was fantastic and well worth the trip. Come from Away is show about how Gander Newfoundland handled the 7000 plus stranded passengers of flights grounded because of 9/11.

As some of you may know, most of our trips of the last 10 years have been documented in detail with daily logs and many photos. This 'mini' trip did not warrant such a 'production' however I will document it a little further in the future. We ended up on the Bruce Peninsula in Tobermory and Owen Sound (where the winning Lotto Max ticket was sold last week). It was an interesting trip although the weather did not really co-operate. I have posted pictures of the entire trip with descriptions for most pictures. If you are interested, they are at this link.

A Beautiful Fall Day at St-Jean-De-Matha Golf Course Pictures

Victorien Golf Course Going To Pot

This week is the last week for the Victorien Golf Course pictured this morning on previous splash screen. It closes forever on Sunday October 14th to make way for a factory that will grow and manufacture medicinal marijuana. It will no longer be part of the dwindling Groupe Beaudet empire. With this move, Groupe Beaudet will be down to only 3 golf courses after losing the 36 holes of Lachute last year and losing the administration of the Le Diamant golf Club this year. They will still manage Chantecler, Ste-Rose and Iles de Boucherville but I think its a matter of time before they get out of the golf business while staying in the green with their share (20%) in the new venture at Victorien.
The Victorien course is in beautiful shape and even this morning, less than 10 days before its demise, the groundskeepers were hard at work mowing lawns and rolling the greens. That's really the only positive aspect of this dire situation. If you get a chance to play it before October 14th with its reduced prices to close the year, it would be well worth paying your last respects to the course. The only thing you will notice is that the pro-shop has been stripped to the bone. The clubhouse and pro-shop will be converted to labs for the pot growers while the driving range and practice areas will be the location for the manufacturing plant. The green houses will be built where the driving range currently sits. There will be some outdoor growing too.
It's still a mystery to me that we needed to annihilate a golf course to set up this business as there is plenty of agricultural land surrounding Victorien. Golf, at least in this area of Quebec is not very healthy. Urban sprawl is chewing up green spaces. In the last 10 years, we have lost the following courses just on the north shore: Deux-Montagnes (36 holes), Le Boisé (18), St André (27), Mascouche (18) not to mention the Challenger (18) in St-Laurent. Soon to disappear are Rosemere, which got an extension of 2 more years as a public course since the construction permits were not granted. Cardinal in Laval lost its par 3 course and only has a few years of life left. Lachute was bought by a Chinese company that is planning to develop on the land. At least 18 holes of the course will stay open for a few years. Some cities are restricting construction of golf's green spaces while others are foaming at the mouth in anticipation of the new tax dollars coming in due to new development. I don't know how the condo boom is continuing but will there be enough people to fill all these places? To see a couple of pictures of what may be my last round at the course, please click here.

Elections Quebec
I usually keep politics out of this website and never post about politics on Facebook. Most people I know seem to have already voted in the advanced polling but if you haven't, this is food for thought if you live in Deux-Montagnes riding. The D-M electoral district comprises of the two cities of Deux-Montagnes and St-Eustache. There are 10 candidates running but for the sake of this article I will only mention 3. The CAQ (Coalition Avenir Quebec), the PQ (Parti Quebecois) and the PLQ (Parti Liberal Quebec). The Pot party is still in the running but with October 17th arriving soon it seems that this party should go the way of the Bloc Quebecois.
The CAQ's Benoit Charette is the incumbent in Deux-Montagnes. He was MNA from 2008 to 2012. Elected in 2008 as a PQ candidate, Benoit seemed to have seen the light and during that term left the PQ to become independent and eventually join the CAQ. In 2012, he was defeated by PQ's Daniel Goyer by about 3.5% and then regained the seat for the CAQ in 2014 with a 3% margin over Daniel Goyer. I won't mention the Liberals since in this district they are usually a distant 3rd. The Late Jean-Guy Bergeron was the last Liberal to win here in 1989. Running this year for the Liberals is Fabienne Fatou Diop. She was added to the slate very late in the proceedings. Basically, the Liberals have thrown in the towel and have not spent much time here to try to make headway. Unlike municipal elections where you vote for the mayor and councillor separately, the premier of Quebec will be determined by the number of districts that a certain party has won. That being said, even if you want Liberal Philippe Couillard to remain premier, a Liberal vote here probably won't do anything to help him. However voting Liberal may help the PQ party to grab this seat. The CAQ's Benoit Charette has been present in our district and in Two-Mountains for the last 4 years. He is very visible and was at our side during the floods of 2017 and attends many events in Two Mountains including Canada Day. I think he has served us well and the only real alternative is PQ's Daniel Goyer but if you are reading this anglo 'forum', chances are you are not a PQ supporter.
I wouldn't attempt to predict who will be our next premier as the polls are very close. As a Two-Mountaineer, I think we are much better off with Benoit no matter who becomes premier. The thing that matters is that you get out and vote on Monday if you haven't already done so. Remember that in our district, a Liberal vote is more or less a vote for the PQ.

Stan Rose - A Great Friend and Mentor

As you have probably heard or read by now Stanley Rose passed away on the weekend just 2 days after his 69th birthday. He had been dealing with a rare blood disorder for almost 3 years but less than 3 weeks ago he had been diagnosed with acute Leukemia. Stan was one of the fastest athletes Two Mountains has ever seen and fast was the way he left this earth. He was always known as a tough guy and he faced his imminent death with the same toughness that guided his life.

I first met Stan in the late 70's when I started playing softball with the 'older' guys. I don't remember when we actually became friends but there was a time when I knew that Stan would be there if I needed anything and visa versa although Stan wasn't one to ask for help. Stan was always there when I needed some guidance. Whenever I had to make a major decision in my life, Stan would cut to the chase and give great advise. When I was thinking of career moves that would change my life, he made me realize what was really important in life and I ended up making the right decisions. I will always be grateful to him for taking me under his wing.

I could go on for pages on what Stan meant to me and all the fun we had on trips with the boys or the ones with the girls. Mexico, Yukon, Dominican Republic, Sugarbush, Wyder Cups and many more. Stan will be missed by many people. I miss him a lot. Condolences to Casey, Dale and Brad and to his best friend Brian. Christopher Curtis wrote a nice tribute to Stan on his Facebook page, Click here to see it.

When Stan knew his passing was quickly approaching he told Casey that he didn't want a 'party' after his departure. He also said: ' do what you want'. There will be a get together to talk about Stan and what he meant to us. Stay tuned to this website for details as they are confirmed.

Large Walleye Caught Near St-Eustache Bridge

Back in mid July, avid fisherman Paul Charbonneau went out in his kayak and pulled in this large 7 pound / 27 inch Walleye from the Milles-Iles river. The Doré as we call it in Quebec, is back in the river as Paul released it.

That part of the river, near the bridge and the St-Eustache church is also known for large sturgeons and muskellunge (muskies) that are frequently caught there.

The Walleye is the official fish of Saskatchewan and Manitoba although in some parts of Canada it is called the pickerel although it is not related to the pickerel. Joseph Fitzmorris a/k/a the Green Phantom Featured in Saturday Gazette
'Local' celebrity Joseph Fitzmorris is back in the wrestling ring after a year sabbatical due to injury. In this weekend's Montreal Gazette his struggle to get back to his love was featured in a 2 page spread as well as a huge front page headline. Christopher Curtis wrote the lengthy article that documents the many lives of the Green Phantom. Teacher by day and wrestler by night, 'Joey's' passion for wrestling is highlighted in this article.

Joseph has been wrestling for many years but the biggest match of his career was the battle to get back into wrestling form. He went from crutches to inside the ropes during a long year of rehab. At 42 years old, it wasn't an easy task but he is happy to be back in the ring.

47th Annual Canada Day Celebration in Two Mountains
Deux-Montagnes, June 14th, 2018 – At the Deux-Montagnes City Hall, a press conference was held to announce the 47th edition of Canada Day in Deux-Montagnes to be held on Sunday, July 1st at Central Park, located at 13th Avenue, south of Oka Road in Deux-Montagnes. A day will be filled with a parade, official ceremonies, family activities, performances from well-known local artists, not to forget the highly anticipated fireworks show, presented by the City of Deux-Montagnes. New for 2018, a Circus Arts Initiation Workshop will be set up for the kids in the afternoon. This year’s headlining band is The Hi-Fins, a musical tribute to British Rock from the 60’s. For a complete schedule, please consult the website of the event organizing committee at  http://www.celebrationcanada-mrcdm.ca./

The organizing committee is pleased to announce that Mr. Donald Snell Jr. will serve at the 2018 Parade Marshall. Don, a lifelong resident of Deux-Montagnes, has been volunteering for more than 40 years in our community, not generally as an organizer, but as a doer, someone who performs the super important, yet less pleasant aspects of volunteerism – the setting-up, the tearing down, the cooking, the lifting, the moving. From an early age as a coach in Teeball, to being a Wolf Cub leader, to helping with fundraisers with Holy Family Church and the Deux-Montagnes Fireman’s Association, to more recently over the last decade with the Lions Club, Don Snell exemplifies this all important part of volunteerism and community spirit. Major Changes To Deux-Montagnes Train Schedule
Starting on Monday June 25th, the Two-Mountains train schedule will have significant schedule changes mostly affecting rush hour trains. The Réseau de transport métropolitain (RTM) is also changing its name to exo, which will combine all of the train, bus and adapted transport services around the greater Montreal area, and more specifically the North and South. Some of the changes in the schedule seem to reflect that travel times are no longer the 35 minutes that was supposed to be achieved for the entire route now some trains are scheduled at 44 minutes travel time from central station to the Deux-Montagnes station. The trains that only went as far as Roxboro no longer exist although and there is still one train that departs from Roxboro in the morning. The 17:20 train from DM to Central Station has been removed from the schedule. Click here to see the new schedule. The old one is still available on the top left until next weekend.

Deux-Montagnes Softball Association Event

The D.M.S.A. Fundraising game has been moved to Wednesday night July 11 at Olympia Park on Ewenson field. All DMSA games will be cancelled that night, however, this will be a great opportunity to come join us to celebrate DMSA’s 50th anniversary with 500 of your closest friends.
As this is a regular softball night, you will not have to change your weekend plans to join us for this amazing event. This is more of an entertaining family event, than a softball game. Although the DMSA will be represented by some great players, this event is about showcasing 4 of the world’s greatest softball players. Make no mistake, this event is about Les 4 chevaliers and their travelling show. They will entertain everyone with their voice, costumes, but more amazingly, their sheer ability to play softball. This event should not be missed. Read more ...

Back from Iceland
As some of you know, we just took a trip to Iceland. It was 14 days of a very different and beautiful country. As we travelled, we kept up a travel log with lots (and I mean lots) of pictures and videos. I had been researching this trip for a while but left it up to the experts to plan the self-drive tour. It was one of our best trips so far. My only apprehension about recommending this destination is the cost of things here but there are a few ways to get around it. It's very cheap to fly there but after be prepared to be surprised. If you have already planned a trip here there are a few tips among the stories in the blog. To access it, you can click on the globe labelled Our Trips above.

Incredible Edible Kicks Off a New Year
Incredible Edible Deux-Montagnes is happy to announce that new raised beds for fruit and vegetable gardens have been installed in all of the following parks: - Mastromattéo - Mikaël Kingsbury - Jean-Paul Beauchemin - Armitage - Olympia - Gérard-Brault.
These gardens are for everyone. They belong to the community and therefore, everyone is welcome to contribute, as well as to harvest.
They will all be planted by volunteers during the upcoming week or two, but, if, to kick things off, you would like to contribute a vegetable or fruit plant, Incredible Edible is inviting you to do so this weekend. If you're attending the Neighbourhood Party at one of these parks, then do check out the new installations, which were provided by the city. The volunteers who have been organizing behind the scenes are very excited for Deux-Montagnes to have this beautiful, entirely volunteer-run project in the city. We hope you'll enjoy it and make it your own.

For info, you can go to their FaceBook page here or email them at incroyablesdm@gmail.com

Large Fire on Place Florian-David
On Sunday May 27 at around 7:20am firefighters were called to a fire in a condo building on Place Florian-David. The fire raged and destroyed all the units and was hot enough to melt the vinyl siding on its sister building next door. It was quite the scene as dozens of firefighters sprayed tremendous amounts of water from every angle. To my knowledge, no one was hurt in the incident which will displace a few families. The building looks like a complete loss. Here are some pictures and videos of the fire and the location on a map along with a Google street view of what the building used to look like.

A note from the owners of some of the units that were destroyed (Tracy Bartley and Yvon Albert).  We would like to thank everyone that helped out today with everything from giving moral support to helping try to salvage the tenants personal belongings. Also a BIG HUGE thanks to all the firefighters that went above and beyond, (they had to come back twice after the fire re-caught) and then they helped out emptying the apartments. They were on site for over 10 hours. - I have added a few pictures that Tracy sent me from the clean up as well an amazing shot of the flames at their peak.

Last year, during the floods I was amazed at the hard work that everyone in the fire department was doing. They helped people in all kinds of ways for a long period of time. We should be proud of our firefighters as they do a fine job in our city. Also thanks to the St-Eustache and Pointe-Calumet forces for giving us a hand.

Lull in the Action
You may once again have seen low activity on this website in the last few days. It's partly because the general consensus is that this spring will not be as hectic as the flood of spring '17. It's also because we have been busy touring Utah and updating our travel blog. As the trip is wrapping up, you can access it if you wish by clicking the U in 2mopaul.com above. It contains a lot of info and pictures as Utah is a very spectacular state. We have also experienced quite a variety of weather. From temperatures in the +30°C's at the beginning to minus 24°C's with the wind chill back to +30°C's for the next couple of days. It's been quite an adventure so far as it winds down in Las Vegas. This travel log is really a diary so that we may look back at some of our trips when we are not as adventurous in our more 'mature' years. You are welcome to take a look. Eventually, if time and weather permits, there will be a 'best of' video produced but don't hold your breath as summer is coming (I hope). Here is the link if the U above does not work.

Starting on Friday April 27th. the commuter line between Two-Mountains and Central station will not run from Friday 8pm until Monday mornings. This is for an indefinite period of time. Although details are not yet available, a bus service is supposed to be in place. Along with that, the Mount Royal tunnel will be completely closed from 2020 to the end of 2021. This will affect the Deux-Montagnes line for at least a year.

Hope to see you all there!

What Is It?

I saw a picture that brought back memories of the 60's and early 70's. There's a good  chance you had one of these in your house. We had that exact model.

If you don't know what it is, you are probably less than 50 years old. If you are between 35 and 50 you might know what maybe replaced it for a few years. You can see that by clicking on this picture.

Give up? It was called a rotor. In Two-Mountains, if you had a rooftop antenna, it was probably directional. To get stations from Montreal you would have to point due east to get good reception as most of the transmitting antennae were on Mount Royal. If you wanted the American channels, 3 and 5 and eventually 22 and 57 you had to rotate your antenna almost due South. If you click on the picture, you will see the first Videotron cable box. You even had to fine tune some channels with the wheel on the right, especially channels that were scrambled.

Ex Two-Mountaineer, Ken Duff, has been a key organizer of the annual Porchfest held in his stomping ground of Vankleek Hill. The event is back again this year with plethora of entertainment. There is still room for a few more performers to join in the ranks. Ken is putting out an invitation to any Two-Mo band that is willing to participate. World Water Day - March 22nd
International World Water Day is held annually on 22 March as a means of focusing attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. A few years ago, I put together a slide show with various pictures that we have taken locally and on trips. It used to be set to relaxing music and was a great 10 minute break from the stress of every day life. My new photo software (SmugMug) does not support music in slide shows but the pictures are still available. Use this link and press the play button on the top right and you can view the pictures if you like. They are not all about fresh water since many are pictures feature salt water but you still get wet when you swim in it.

St Patrick's Day with the Fitzmorris' Clan

As per tradition, March 17th was celebrated was celebrated with the Fitzmorris family. The 'rumoured' final celebration was held at Emma and Mike's in Vankleek Hill, Ontario. It was a nippy -7ºC but the sun helped fight off the cold. The entertainment was top notch and a great time was had by all. Click here for some pictures and a video will follow when the brain clears up.

My Latest Costco Visit
Last Friday, I made my usual small trip to Costco for a few small things. $400 later (including renewing my membership) I was on my way to my car with a few things in my cart. On my way, I saw this small (elderly*) woman loading up the back of her SUV with items from her cart. There were two large objects left in her cart. A case of 32 bottles of beer and a box with 4 windshield washer fluid containers. Being an expert on how much a case of beer weighs (about 45 lbs in this case), I knew the small statured woman would have a hard time reaching into her cart to load up the SUV. I stopped and grabbed the case and found a place for it in the trunk and then took the splish-splish and loaded that up as well. She might have struggled with that too since it's about 35 pounds with no handles. She thanked me profusely and I had done my good deed for the day. As I moved on and reached the front of her car, lo and behold was her beer drinking husband either playing Candy Crush on his phone or reading a book. His large hands prevented me from seeing what he was holding. I was in shock so I didn't even react or stare him down or anything. All this time, he had been hearing our conversation through the open hatch of the SUV and probably watching me in his rear view mirror. WTF? If there was anything physically wrong with him, he could have at least acknowledged me by opening his window but I think he was an able bodied individual who was just thinking about getting home, plopping down on his La-z-boy and having his wife bring him the newly acquired beer. Did I mention that he was waiting for his load while 'illegally' blocking parked cars so that his wife wouldn't have to walk too far from the Costco exit? Such a nice gesture. At least now I had a new enemy for Costco, replacing the people who leave their carts anywhere but in the cart return areas. *elderly - she might have been in her late 50's. There are a lot of old people around these days, says one who will be 62 very shortly.

Old Lake Youth Pictures Found
While cleaning up the office in the Legion, someone opened a box that was labelled as a first aid kit only to find no first aid supplies. Instead there were some notebooks and pictures. A lot of the pictures were from Lake Youth Sports Association (LYSA) hockey teams and awards presentation banquets. They seem to all be from the same year which I estimate to be around 1960. If you played hockey in Two-Mountains then, there is a good chance that you will be in the pictures. I have uploaded them in a album called Lake Youth Circa 1960 at this link. Here are just a few people I recognized in the pictures. Randy Ross, Gary Campbell, George Shapcott, The Heinz twins, Bobby Fordham, Murray Mattson, Trevor Vaage, Johnny Lariviere,  Barney Rooney, Brian Snell and many more. See who you can recognize. You may leave a comment on any picture by clicking the speech bubble on the bottom right of the picture.

Another Victory Uploaded
If you want to travel back to 1971 for a bit, I've prepared another Victory from December 15th, 1971. Ah! The good old days when there was a warning about driving after drinking (last page) and Tony Accurso making headlines for his athletic prowess. I still have more to post but the process for each issue is quite laborious. First I have to take pictures of each page. Lighting and focus is always an issue. Then comes the long part. Editing each page which means splitting each one in 2. The Victory is in a portrait format but your computer screen is probably landscape therefore I split every page in a top and a bottom in order to see more on the screen. Also the papers that I receive have usually yellowed considerably through time. I usually use a black and white filter to restore them however I don't do that for more recent issues that used colour. To access all the restored Victory's, use the link on the top right. To see the 'new' December 1971 issue click here.

A Slow News Month - February in 2mo
There hasn't been much going in 2mo in the last while so I haven't posted much new information. Hence, there hasn't been much activity on my website. That sometimes happens when we are travelling but it's not the case this time. I guess people have been hibernating or sitting at home watching the Olympics.

There has been a lot of noise on Facebook regarding getting ready for another spring flood because of all the snow we have had. Facebook is a great conduit for fear mongering. How many times have you received hoaxes about people trying to hack into your computer through Facebook. It does happen that some people have had their Facebook profiles 'spoofed' or 'hijacked' but there are a lot of 'fake' alerts going around on Facebook. Before forwarding or sharing these ominous messages, you could simply go to www.snopes.com and search to see if the threat is real. 99% of the time it's not.

Getting back to the spring flood, over 9 months have passed since the disaster struck. The Quebec government hasn't fully processed a large percentage of victims. It's has become a long and stressful process for many people. The stress of hearing people say that it will happen again this year isn't helping much either. Last year's floods were the perfect storm of things happening. The snowmelt, high water levels in reservoir's in the Laurentians and 3 weeks of constant rain in April were all major factors in pushing the limits of our waterways. Hopefully, there were some lessons learned last year in controlling the levels. I don't think we will be seeing a repeat of last year. I hope I am right, so relax and enjoy the mild weather.

The Robert Brown Murder on Canal D
For you old Two Mountaineers, you probably remember the story of Bob Brown, a Two Mountains policeman who shot and killed his wife Gail back in the 80's. If you don't remember the story, he brought his wife in the woods and tried to pass it off as a hunting accident. Unfortunately for him, two people on a 4x4 that happened to be in the area ruined his plan.
The story will be presented on the show 'Policier Criminel' (Bad Cops) on Canal D on Tuesday January 30th at 10:00pm. His police partner at the time was Ron Kesseler and he is interviewed and featured in the re-enactment. Canal D is from Bell Media and is channel 1125 on Bell Fibe and channel 636 on Videotron. Score For The Cure Raises Record Amount
On a mild but very windy Saturday (January 20), the 10th (at least) Score for the Cure Ball Hockey Tournament raised a record $3550 for cancer research at the MUHC. In the final, the 14th game of the day, the Two Mo Young Bloods defeated defending champion Buerlilng team. Although the temperature reached a mild +3ºC, the westerly wind made it feel much colder. The mayor, Denis Martin and two councilors, Micheline Stabile-Groulx and Margie Lavalée were on hand for the official puck drop and national anthem. A video of the event will be posted shortly however there are pictures available of the teams and some of the action here.
The Score for the Cure ball hockey tournament is the first event in the year that raises money towards the Dan Klimas Drive For The Cure Golf tournament. The 18th edition of the golf classic will be held on Thursday June 28, 2018 at the exclusive Fontainebleau Golf Club. This tournament usually sells out by February and there are limited places for '2mo boys'. If you are interested in participating, you can send Dan an email using this email address: DanKlimas@2mopaul.com.

Score for the Cure Fundraiser All Set for Saturday January 20th
Once again this year, some young and not so young souls will be braving the cold for a day of ball hockey at the Klimas Recreational Center. (Actually, the long term forecast calls for a balmy -1ºC). Six teams will be vying for the bragging rights in this fun and friendly tournament. For the fans and players there will be food and refreshments available for a donation. There will also be a raffle with many prizes including tickets to a Canadiens/Flyer  game on February 26th. Tickets are 1 for $5 and 3 for $10. Last Victory Ever Published
It's been over 33 years. The final edition of our local paper, The Victory sent out its last edition on July 4th, 1984. I have posted it on my site. It's not in very good shape but it's somewhat legible. I still have a lot more issues to publish but it's takes a bit of time to photographs then edit them so they can be readable. The link to the Victory is on the top right. Currently, there are 24 issues ranging from April 1964 to July 1984. I still have few more to post as well as some even older editions. To access them all, use to link above. This is the link to the last one to reach our mailboxes.

Welcome to 2018
If you visited this site throughout the holidays you might have noticed that there was little action going on. Usually that is due to us travelling somewhere or not having access to the internet. Sometimes it's because that not much going on. This Christmas season there was another thing slowing things down, the deep freeze!. The temperature in these parts and lots of other places was frigid. Here were didn't make it into the single digit negatives for the entire break. With the wind chill, some nights the Fahrenheit and Celsius scales met at minus 40.  Last night, I went out to shovel in a windless -11ºC and it felt like I was in northern Florida. This week we are expected a meltdown with temperatures on the positive Celsius side for the first time in weeks. Bring out the lawn chairs and the BBQ's and let's have a picnic. The deep freeze was no excuse to not update my website but it's hard to update it from under a electric throw blanket while catching up on some TV and of course watching lots of hockey, Spengler, IIHF Juniors and the lowly Habs finally winning 2 in  a row. They might make the playoffs if they go on a 20 game winning streak. Congrats to Canada Juniors and seniors for their gold medals. And to the Swedish captain who threw his silver medal away, that's not a way to take defeat.

As for what's coming up in the new year, the Dan Klimas Score For the Cure Ball Hockey tournament has been moved ahead a couple of weeks to Saturday January 20th. That should be a great tournament in the newly designed Klimas Recreation centre on Regent street. More details and a schedule will appear here when it's finalized. I believe the Lions Carnival will take place on the following Saturday (Jan 27th), more details to follow. Don't forget to use the calendar to keep up on some of the happenings. If you have an event that you want included in the calendar feel free to contact me.

You may have noticed a new link on the left side called Goyetche.ca. This is a web site created by Darryl Goyetche now living in Cochrane Alberta. It traces the roots of the Goyetche family from our ancestor Jean Goyetche, a Basque fisherman, who came to Canada around 1793 and planted the Goyetche seed. Because the name is uncommon, it helped in tracing the roots of our family. The name is not at all related to the more popular Goyette which has completely different roots. In 1991, we took my parents to Bayonne, France to try to find out more about our heritage. It was an interesting visit. In case you are wondering what the name means. Goy means high place and etch is house. Literally speaking, our the name means hill with a house on it as opposed to another name like Etchegoyen which is house on the hill. Most times, if you see Etch in a name like Sam Etcheverry for example, the ancestors will be of Basque origin. In Sam's case, he was the son of a Basque sheep farmer who emigrated to New Mexico and eventually came to Montreal to play for the Alouettes as quarterback in the 50's and eventual coach of the Als and the Concorde.
