Foursome
defends Tartan Fall Classic Title 03-09-2002
The
foursome of Paul, Stan, Rob and Ron successfully defended their 2001 title
by fighting back on the back nine of the Patriotes golf course to shoot
a 7 under 29. After a dissappointing -2 on the front nine partly due to
a bogie on the 6th hole, the defending champions fought back to birdie
7 of the last 9 holes to squeeze Team Gorilla out of the championship.
Team Gorilla, Mike, Don, Dale and Brad 3-putted # 16 to drop the shot that
cost them the championships.
The
back nine started well, with Paul chipping in from 30 yards after a missed
drive on hole 10. On 13, Robert chipped to within 3 feet after a 290 yard
drive left the ball on the side 'pin-high'. Stan was the only one to hit
the green on 14 and although the putt was a difficult side-hill 30 footer,
Ron knocked it in to put the team back in contention. Hole 15 was made
easy with a decent drive and an approach to within 12 feet. Hole 16 didn't
look like a birdie until Paul sank a 45 foot putt. That was followed by
a disappointing par on 17. On 18, things looked bleak as three putts went
by the hole. The final putt found the hole and the defending champions
were in the clubhouse with a -9 score. The tie breaker was established
before the round that the start of the round would break any ties. Paul's
team went Birdie/Par/Birdie while team Gorilla went Birdie/Par/Par.
In
the side bet skins game, Team Gorilla took the first 7 with a 2 on hole.
Then the defending champions, took 3 skins on 10 with the 30 yard chip-in.
Team Gorilla took the 11th with an eagle. The rest of the holes were carried
over and taken by the Gorillas since they had the first skin.
